John, I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished in July by supporting reform-minded prosecutors throughout the country.
I want to take the time to list it all for you because I want you to know what you’ve made possible.
- On July 2nd, the District Attorneys that we helped elect in San Francisco, Boston, and Philadelphia announced they were launching Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commissions. These commissions will finally provide a dedicated system to review and address the serious traumas and injustices inflicted by a legal system that has run rampant for too long.
- On July 14th in Travis County, Texas, not one but two Real Justice-endorsed prosecutors won crucial elections. Delia Garza will be the next County Attorney. José Garza won his runoff for District Attorney by 38 points. He’ll go on to the General Election in November, where he will be favored but also face enormous opposition.
- As Trump’s goons were literally kidnapping protestors of the streets of Portland and threatening to go into more cities, Real Justice-supported Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner threw down the gauntlet to protect our right to protest in support of Black Lives. On national television he proclaimed. “Anyone, including federal law enforcement, who unlawfully assaults and kidnaps people will face criminal charges from my office. At trial, they will face a Philadelphia jury.”
- In the pages of The New York Times, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin—who you helped elect last year — shone a spotlight on prosecutors' role in perpetuating systematic problems in police forces. He declared how he’s leading the way: “If police departments won’t remove officers who lack integrity, prosecutors should ensure that no one is prosecuted based on those officers’ unreliable accounts. Accordingly, my office will no longer charge cases that rely solely on uncorroborated reports from officers with prior serious misconduct.”
- You’ve continued fearlessly supporting the August elections of Kim Gardner, Victoria Burton Harris, and Monique Worrell who will reform the criminal justice systems in St Louis, Detroit, and Orlando respectively.
This is real progress. You are making it happen. And we need to keep up this momentum because there is SO MUCH MORE work to do. We’re $6,000 short of our July goal of $50,000. Will you donate $5 to help us reach our goal and keep powering the fearless organizers and volunteers of Team Real Justice?
Donate >>This month is proof that with a FOCUSED mission and COMMITTED supporters, we can make serious progress to reform our criminal justice system.
Now, Real Justice endorsed candidates are up in FOUR different elections in August, starting with Kim Gardner for Circuit Attorney and Victoria Burton-Harris County Prosecutor THIS TUESDAY.
Officers are engaging in brutal policing from coast to coast. Most District Attorneys continue to let them off the hook.
We have so much more to do, but I’m incredibly inspired by what we’ve already accomplished — and I hope you are, too.
You’ve made this possible, and we need your continued support to keep this progress growing. Please donate $5 or whatever you can to help the push for Real Justice be stronger than ever in the months ahead.
The only way we’re going to create a justice system that is truly just is if we stay focused and work for the change we dream of.
Let’s GO!
Shaun
