Dear John,
Alaska’s bears need your help.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) plans to rescind regulations protecting animals in Alaska’s Kenai National Wildlife Refuge — including allowing bear baiting. Bear baiting involves feeding bears at a designated station, so that they become familiar with the location as a food source — subsequently, making them easy targets for hunters.
As bears prepare for hibernation, they eat excessive amounts of food to put on an additional 20 to 40 pounds. Baiting stations take advantage of this natural behavior — and hunters lure bears with donuts, grease, and other high calorie foods in mass. Bears and all wild animals should be safe in our nation’s refuges.
Submit a comment to the U.S. FWS by August 10th and urge them to reject this rule and protect Alaska’s bears from cruel trophy hunters. Thank you for using your voice to protect these animals.
