Help us meet our Membership Month goal!

Panel Discussion Aug. 10: People-Centered Transit

Talk with Jeff Tumlin: Highlights

Meet Our Members

Last chance: Help us reach our Membership Month goal

We've raised $4,500 so far! We just need to raise $500 more today in order to meet our goal of $5,000 - all of which will be matched by our generous board of directors!

Meeting our goal for membership month will enable us to fight back against service cuts and make sure that our transit system works for us - the riders. We're proud of all the wins we've had so far this year:

  • We advocated for riders throughout SFMTA's budget process
  • We got masks to Muni drivers and riders in the early days of the shelter-in-place to help keep everyone safe
  • We raised our voices to help secure the $25 billion for transit in the federal stimulus package
  • We raised *your* voices to support transit priority as part of San Francisco's recovery and future

But we really need your help to take our movement even further. To save transit as we know it, we are engaging an ever broader community of transit riders around emergency transit-only lanes to make buses faster and more reliable. We are laying the groundwork for long-term, equitable transit funding measure. We are engaged locally and regionally to make sure public transit is ready for riders to hop on board safely.

Can you give today to keep us speaking up for you and other transit riders across the city?

Panel Discussion August 10: People-Centered Transit

What would it look like for Muni to truly serve communities across San Francisco?

Our transit system is being fundamentally restructured in order to survive the pandemic. This transformation offers an opportunity to center transit on those who depend on it most. Join us for a panel discussion with three community leaders - Queen Vanessa Banks, Christina Rubke, and Queena Chen - as they share their visions for transit that works for seniors, people with disabilities, and underserved communities who rely on transit.

Takeaways from last night's event with Jeff Tumlin

Last night, SFMTA Director Jeff Tumlin gave us the rundown of what it was like to completely rebuild the Muni system in 48 hours armed with data and guiding priorities. He shared that SFMTA's crisis response is to "try, fail, quickly make adjustments and move on." This means that they are doing engagement and responding to feedback in real time. (And yes, we'll continue to be very involved in making sure riders' needs are heard!)

SFMTA, like many transit agencies across the world, is barreling toward a budget cliff. Securing funding will be a key priority for the agency over the next few years. Prop 15, which is on the ballot this November, would increase revenue for cities across California. Because of Muni's share of the city's General Fund, we estimate this could be tens of millions of dollars annually.

Looking forward after November, we'll need to work together to make sure Muni gets equitable, long-term funding on the ballot in 2022.

Good news: You don't have to wait until November to support transit. Asked what we can do to support Muni, Jeff said: "Join forces." By becoming a member, donating, and volunteering, you can have a substantial impact on the future of transit in San Francisco.

Meet our Members - part 3!

Queen Vanessa Banks is an advocate and community organizer in the Bayview. She cares about public transit because “so many people depend on public transportation. I care to advocate so seniors shall be safe and comfortable riding Muni. SFMTA needs to do better on communicating changes to seniors and people living with disabilities.”

When she’s not advocating for public transit riders, Queen Vanessa works with the Born and Raised Survivors urban nonprofit for survivors of the War on Drugs.

Regina Islas grew up in San Francisco and does not own a car. She grew up riding the 15 and enjoyed that riding it end-to-end allowed "an amazing glimpse into different cross sections of the city."

In Regina's view, a good transit system is "reliable, accessible, and safe for riders and drivers. We have to reinvest in housing, transit, and healthcare. People who need help should not have to ride a transit vehicle in order to have shelter for the day."
