This Black History Month, the Delaware Democratic Party is proud to celebrate two extraordinary Delaware leaders who were recently honored as History Makers at the Wilmington Public Library:

State Senator Margaret Rose Henry and New Castle County Executive Marcus Henry.

Their story is not just one of individual achievement—it is a Delaware story, a family story, a story of service across generations.

Senator Margaret Rose Henry: A Trailblazer Who Changed Delaware

Senator Margaret Rose Henry made history as Delaware’s first African American woman elected to the State Senate, representing the Second Senatorial District and serving as Majority Whip of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

Born to a longshoreman and a domestic worker, she became the first in her family to graduate from college, proving early in life that education opens doors not just for one person, but for entire communities.

From restoring voting rights for returning citizens, to strengthening gun safety laws, advancing equal pay, protecting children from bullying, increasing the minimum wage, and expanding health care access, Senator Henry’s legislative record reflects a lifetime commitment to women, families, seniors, and working people.

Her leadership reshaped Delaware. Her legacy continues to guide us and shape future leaders in Delaware.

Marcus Henry: A New Chapter in History

On January 7, 2025, Marcus Henry was sworn in as the first person of color to serve as New Castle County Executive since the position was created in 1966.

Before taking office, he spent over a decade serving in senior leadership roles under three County Executives, building experience in economic development, community services, and public administration.

A Wilmington native and graduate of Howard University and the University of Delaware, Marcus Henry represents the next generation of leadership grounded in community, committed to equity, and dedicated to effective governance.

His historic election is a powerful reminder: representation matters. And progress is built step by step.
