Friend,
This Saturday, we honor Congressman John Lewis on his birthday — a man who dedicated his life to expanding democracy and protecting the right to vote. Take three minutes to check your voter registration status today. → [[link removed]]
As we reflect on his legacy, we do so at a critical moment. The Supreme Court is weighing a Louisiana redistricting case [[link removed]] that could effectively eliminate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act — the very provision Congressman Lewis marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to secure.
Congressman John Lewis never accepted “that’s just the way it is.” He taught us that the work doesn’t stop — it adapts, moves, and shows up in new places with new people ready to carry it forward. While some states are putting up new obstacles, others are moving in the opposite direction — expanding access and protecting the right to vote. And it’s thanks to the organizers on the ground fighting for our right to vote. Here’s what that looks like across the country:
🗳️ States expanding voter registration 🗳️
⭐ Connecticut fully funded its Voting Rights Act
⭐ Virginia extended its voter registration deadline ahead of elections
⭐ Washington passed a bill directing the Governor and Secretary of State to explore automatic voter registration methods, including automatically enrolling eligible applicants for public assistance
⭐ Nevada sent voters a constitutional amendment that would protect universal vote-by-mail
🗳️ States protecting mail voting 🗳️
⭐ California strengthened mail-in ballot access
⭐ Texas passed laws improving ballot accessibility
🗳️ States removing barriers 🗳️
⭐ Virginia sent voters a ballot measure that would amend the state constitution to restore voting rights upon release from incarceration
⭐ Connecticut, Kentucky, Maine, and New Hampshire expanded access for voters with disabilities
⭐ Maine voters rejected a restrictive ballot measure targeting seniors and people with disabilities
Congressman John Lewis dedicated his life to this work, and as we fight attempts to silence us, we have to celebrate the small wins. Some states are stepping up to protect the voting rights he fought so hard to defend.
As he once reminded us, “The vote is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democratic society.” Let’s honor that truth by using it. Take a moment today to check your voter registration at WhenWeAllVote.org. → [[link removed]]
