Colombia Vice President Threatens InSight Crime with Criminal Charges

Following an outcry from media organizations and institutions defending freedom of the press, the complaint was quickly dropped. InSight Crime is deeply grateful for the support received from the Committee to Protect Journalists, Human Rights Watch and Fundación para la Libertad de Prensa, among many others.

Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office has notified InSight Crime Co-director Jeremy McDermott of criminal proceedings brought against him by Vice President Marta Lucía Ramírez linked to an investigation into the drug trafficker known as “Memo Fantasma.”

In the summons, Prosecutor Mario Hernan Barahona stated that the vice president had brought criminal charges against McDermott for “affecting her right to moral integrity, good name, dignity and honor.”

Over that time, the Colombian Attorney General has confirmed the identity of the drug trafficker masquerading as a businessman in Spain. A number of properties belonging to Memo have been seized by authorities. And a criminal complaint was filed – and quickly dropped – by the Colombian Vice President.
