Wednesday evening, we saw the historic passage—on a bipartisan basis—of the Child Care is Essential Act and the Child Care for Economic Recovery Act in the House of Representatives!
The Child Care is Essential Act would dedicate $50 billion in relief funding for the child care sector. CLASP’s estimates show how these funds would be allocated to states. The Child Care for Economic Recovery Act would further increase federal investment in the child care sector by providing more stable funding to the system and making the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit fully refundable, which would allow many families with low incomes to access the credit for the first time.
The work is not done. Now, we need to take action to ensure children can safely thrive, parents can go back to work, and racial equity does not worsen. We have a chance to harness the political will behind child care to seek significant funding in the next coronavirus relief package now being negotiated.
Please call your members of Congress and activate your networks to call theirs. Let them know that we need at least $50 billion in the next coronavirus relief package to sustain the child care sector.
