After our lawsuit, Iowa's Secretary of State agreed to stop wrongful voter challenges.

As a result of our federal lawsuit, Iowa's Secretary of State has just agreed to stop the wrongful citizenship-based voter challenges of more than 2,000 Iowans who were registered to vote. He has also agreed to discontinue the practice of relying on outdated state driver's license information to challenge voters within 90 days of an election.

We filed the lawsuit in October 2024 after Secretary Paul Pate wrongly used outdated state driver's license information to challenge fully qualified, naturalized citizens, in many cases making them cast only provisional ballots – which in many counties were not counted – instead of regular ballots.

Iowans deserve elections free from this sort of unjustified, intimidating effort by our highest state officials. It targeted fully qualified voters in a discriminatory and unreliable fashion, undermining both voting rights and people's confidence in elections.

All U.S. citizens have a fundamental right to vote, and to do so without unfair interference or discrimination.
