Friends,
In early July, there was discussion throughout the community about changing the street name of Jubal Early Drive. I oppose this change because it does nothing to move forward important discussions about how we contextualize and discuss history, it simply erases the past.
Changing the name of a street will not help the citizens of Winchester. However, it will have negative impacts on businesses on Jubal Early Drive. During these tough economic times, they do not need to incur further costs to change their stationery, contact customers, and work with their vendors to change relevant information, that’s wrong.
Instead of symbolic change, we need real discussions and debates about how we frame history and move forward together.
Across the commonwealth, we are seeing monuments and memorials torn down, removed, and vandalized. Virginia’s citizens deserve better, they deserve to know why these monuments were put up, understand why some of them are problematic, and better understand ALL of our history, not just parts that are convenient or match a narrative. We should be working to contextualize monuments and street names so we can confront our past, not erase it.
Removing monuments does nothing to teach our complicated history, citizens of Winchester deserve better.
Thank you,
Bill Wiley
