Donald Trump just did something I wasn’t sure he was even capable of.
He told the truth.
Here’s what Trump said (via Twitter, of course) yesterday:
“With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???"
Don’t get me wrong — almost every word of that is a lie.
But it nevertheless reveals a truth that should concern anyone who believes in democracy.
Trump is telling us — openly, plainly, and NOT accidentally — that he intends to do what any fascist would:
- Foment suspicion around the election.
- Deny the results if he loses.
- Maybe even refuse to leave office when his term ends.
This is an all-hands-on-deck moment for the American people (whichever candidate anyone might prefer).
If you can, please chip in today.
Help us resist any attempt by Trump to stay in power illegally. And help us continue fighting the forces of plutocracy he embodies.

See the note I sent yesterday afternoon (copied below in case you missed it) for more.

Did the subject line of this email alarm you?
It should.
Because Donald Trump just wondered out loud (via Twitter, of course) if we should “Delay the Election.”
To be absolutely clear, the election should NOT be postponed.
And Public Citizen is doing everything we can to see to it that the election not only occurs as scheduled, but is conducted in such a way that every American can vote easily and safely even in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus emergency.
Federal law — which only Congress can change — spells out precisely when Election Day will be. (It’s November 3 this year, by the way. Mark your calendar if you haven’t already!)
But since when does the law mean anything to Donald Trump?
If he was serious, the President of the United States of America just openly admitted that he is considering what would amount to a coup d’etat to remain in power — in flagrant, unprecedented violation of the Constitution.
And Trump is for sure trying to sow doubt about the upcoming election, which he may use to question the results or even refuse to leave office.
This is not about who wins the election. It is about a threat to the very foundations of democracy.
Please donate whatever you can today. You’ll help supercharge our resistance to any attempt by Trump to stay in office illegally. And you’ll give us more power to continue fighting the forces of plutocracy he embodies.
Contribute now.
We are being tested. I know that, together, we will meet the challenge.
Thank you for supporting this shared project called Public Citizen.
In unity,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
