As we move into the second half of what has arguably been one of the toughest years we have ever faced, I want to thank you for the actions you have taken to protect our community.
I recently visited the local QML lab [[link removed]?] to thank the team for their great work - processing hundreds of COVID tests, including those from Victoria. Major testing is also now underway across south east Queensland [[link removed]?].
The Morrison Government continues to do what it can to minimise the impact on people’s livelihoods.
Recently, the Treasurer and Finance Minister provided an Economic and Fiscal Update [[link removed]?]. This demonstrated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our nation’s finances - as well as the scale of the support provided [[link removed]] to prepare our health system and cushion the blow for households and businesses.
Our recovery is going to take some time. It’s hoped Australia’s current low case numbers will entice international business to our shores. The screen industry [[link removed]?] is already showing interest, after Prime Minister Scott Morrison launched the Government’s $400 million Location Incentive Fund [[link removed]] right here on the Gold Coast.
We are also investing $2 billion in JobTrainer [[link removed]?] - to give hundreds of thousands of Aussies access to new skills.
We haven’t forgotten about the impact of the bushfires. The Government is providing $25 million to support 10 Cooperative Research Centres Projects [[link removed]] - including an initiative led by Cassegrain Wines to future-proof Australia’s winemaking industry from the impact of bushfire smoke taint.
Of course, our wildlife is also still recovering - with Currumbin Wildlife Hospital experiencing an increase in admissions of more than 15% compared to a year ago. Federal Government funding allowed the Sanctuary upgrade the Raptor Rehabilitation area [[link removed]?], but more donations are needed [[link removed]] - no matter how small.
Finally, in these times of ever-changing restrictions, I invite you to join me to be a 'real Karen' [[link removed]] and do the right thing [[link removed]]. The 'fake Karens' who abuse retail staff and Police while refusing to wear a mask are not putting the health and safety of the community first.
Take care,
Karen Andrews MP
Federal Member for McPherson
