This is Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

Today, President Trump ignited a firestorm when he suggested that voting by mail is "inaccurate and fraudulent" (it's not) and suggested we "Delay the Election" (we won't, and he can't).

Within hours, 40 Republican and Democratic Secretaries of State across the country joined me in making clear that our elections will continue to be safe, secure, accessible, and should remain ON SCHEDULE.

Ohio's Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose said: "The United States must hold its election on Tuesday, November 3rd. Ohio will have four weeks of absentee voting, early in-person voting and election day voting as we always have. And we will be ready. Ohio will have a safe, secure and accurate Election Day."

Can you take these actions to help set the record straight -- and send a message to Trump?

  1. If you're on Twitter, Retweet the messages from my colleagues below affirming that voting in 2020 will be safe, secure, accessible, and on schedule.
  2. Pledge to vote (even better, pledge to vote early) and take a quick survey. Your feedback can help groups like the PCCC know what information voters need.
  3. Sign the Progressive Change Campaign Committee's petition urging all members of Congress to affirm on the record that there will be no delays in our elections.

Thank you for caring about our democracy.

It will be safe to vote in November, and voting in person is the gold standard when it comes to making sure your vote counts. Election officials are taking precautions to ensure polling places are safe. I'm confident in preparations for the August and November elections.

Democratic Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon:
Steve Simon: The President’s suggested delay of the election is ugly and dangerous. Thankfully, he does not have that power. Bottom line: The election will absolutely go on as scheduled on November 3rd.

Democratic Connecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill:
Denise Merrill: I’m proud to join my colleagues from both parties in unequivocally saying no to any delay in the November 3, 2020 general election.

Democratic North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall:
Elaine Marshall: Let me be clear: Nov. 3 will be Election Day as per the U.S. Constitution, and I will convene the Electoral College at noon on Dec. 14 per the Constitution.

Democratic California Secretary of State Alex Padilla:
Alex Padilla tweet: As California’s Chief Election Officer, let me be clear: The President DOES NOT have the authority to change or delay the General Election. The election will proceed as planned on November 3rd despite Trump’s never ending efforts to undermine our democracy.

Democratic New Mexico Secretary of State Toulouse Oliver:
#ICYMI @POTUS the General Election will most definitely happen on November 3rd.

Democratic Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos:
Jim Condos: No, Mr. President, you don't have the authority to delay the election. The determination of dates is set in the Constitution, and the Constitution is clear on this. A President can't delay democracy just because holding an election is politically inconvenient for them.
