Today is Presidents' Day, John.
It's a reminder of our democracy — of a Constitution carefully and deliberately written so that no one person would hold too much power.
Our founders understood what unchecked authority could do. It's why they built a system of checks and balances, with three coequal branches of government serving as guardrails and ensuring accountability.
That's the promise of America: equal rights, full accountability, and a government that responds to the people, not one man.
And yet, every single day, Donald Trump tests those boundaries.
He ignores Congress and counts on the Republican majorities being afraid to stand up to him.
He attacks judges when they rule against him.
He assigns his Department of Justice to prosecute his political enemies.
He uses the power of the pardon to enrich himself, and the power of the office to extract personal favors from foreign governments.
He threatens that his political party will take over free and fair elections nationwide.
And he governs in terms of loyalty to himself instead of loyalty to the Constitution.
John, this isn’t leadership, and it's certainly not what our founders fought so hard for.
But I believe this administration has severely underestimated the American people. They don't believe we're paying attention, or that we'll come together and stand united against a common threat. But history says otherwise. And the midterm elections in November will be our chance to prove them wrong.
We'll have our first real opportunity to show this president that we don't agree with the direction he's taking our country. If we want to protect our checks and balances, the Constitution, and remind Washington that power belongs to the people, then we'll all need to show up and deliver for our democracy.
