John,
This Presidents’ Day carries special meaning.
As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we remember what America declared in 1776: power does not flow from a throne; it rises from the people.
We rejected a king.
A decade later, the Constitution turned that bold declaration into a durable system. One built to prevent any one person from holding unchecked power.
The Declaration announced our freedom. The Constitution ensured we would never have a monarch again.
Together, they gave us:
• Checks and balances
• Shared federal and state authority
• Protections for individual liberty
• A government accountable to the people
Here in Delaware, the First State to ratify the Constitution, we understand that democracy is not self-sustaining. It must be defended. Renewed. Protected.
Presidents’ Day is not about celebrating power. It is about honoring responsibility.
And at a time when political rhetoric grows more extreme, and some voices suggest concentrating power rather than strengthening institutions, we are reminded why our founders chose a different path.
Defending democracy is not partisan. It is patriotic.
As we near 250 years since America rejected a monarch, we recommit ourselves to that promise:
No crowns.
No thrones.
No kings.
If you believe in strengthening democratic institutions and protecting the rule of law, stand with us.

Democracy is not inherited.
It is earned.
It is defended.
It is renewed by each generation willing to protect it.
Two hundred and fifty years ago, we rejected a king. Today, we choose self-government again.
With resolve and hope,
Evelyn Brady
