"Shoot First, Ask Questions Later.” “License to Kill.” “Kill at Will.”

Dear John,

So-called "Stand Your Ground" laws go by all of these names for one clear reason: they are a license to murder. Using the guise of “self defense,” they fuel gun homicides — especially homicides of Black Americans, like Trayvon Martin and Ahmaud Arbery. They are already law in at least 25 states. And if Americans everywhere don’t remain vigilant and act immediately, Ohio could be next.

As I write this, Ohio lawmakers are planning to sneak a dangerous “Stand Your Ground” bill to Gov. DeWine’s desk. John, we can't sit idly by. It is urgent that Americans across the country join Ohioans in contacting Gov. DeWine to stop this bill from becoming law.
Brady is joining Ohio-based groups in a coalition effort to mobilize Americans everywhere to tell Gov. DeWine that the entire nation is watching his every move. To make sure Gov. DeWine knows we’re watching, we set a goal of collecting 100,000 signatures by September 15. Will you add your name now?

Stand Your Ground laws threaten everyone’s safety, particularly Black Americans. Research shows that in instances where a Black victim is murdered by a white shooter, that shooting is more likely to be deemed legally justified. And even if you don’t live in Ohio, these laws make our country more violent. Far too often, they are used to protect white vigilantism and justify violence against people of color.
The clock is ticking: We only have 47 days left to reach our goal of 100,000 signatures. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in telling Gov. DeWine that Americans everywhere are watching — and we’re demanding that he reject this legislation.

By adding your name, you are joining thousands of activists from across the country in opposition to Stand Your Ground laws. T ogether, we will demand a safer and more just America for us all.
