The hearing focused on accountability and ensuring DHS components have the resources necessary to keep Americans safe. Chairman Garbarino kept the discussion civil and productive, emphasizing facts and oversight responsibilities rather than political soundbites. Serious national security issues require steady leadership. This hearing demonstrated exactly that approach. Brett Guthrie, who chairs Energy and Commerce and last year came to New York City to meet with firefighters and hear their stories. But there were doubts. After rumors that policy items would be removed, Garbarino texted Johnson for assurances the 9/11 fix would stay. And he asked colleagues — particularly Reps. Nick LaLota, Tom Suozzi and Mike Lawler — to reach out to leadership for a last-minute push. It worked. Garbarino's not done in protecting the program's stability and staffing. But this moment will stay with him. "I have a lot of colleagues who live to go out and throw bombs and say things to get likes on Twitter," Garbarino said. "We just saved countless lives by doing this. And that is worth more than any of the other stuff a thousand fold." It was a meaningful reminder that Long Islanders always step up to show gratitude to those who protect our communities. Andrew is grateful to everyone who participated in this year’s Valentines for Heroes initiative. Supporting First Responders in Every Condition Andrew’s team attended Suffolk County Police Department Emergency Services ice rescue training at Lake Ronkonkoma. This hands-on training helps ensure officers are prepared to respond safely and effectively in cold-weather and water-related emergencies. Andrew appreciates the dedication of the Emergency Services Section and their continued commitment to keeping Long Islanders safe in all conditions. Meeting with New York State United Teachers Andrew met with Jon Weston of New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) to discuss federal education funding and policies impacting New York students and educators. He appreciated the opportunity to hear their priorities and remains focused on supporting strong schools and opportunities for students across our state. Casework Highlight: Quick Turnaround for Long Island Families When a constituent recently encountered an urgent passport issue, Andrew’s office immediately stepped in to assist. The constituent’s passport application was received at the processing center on the evening of February 10. By February 12, they had their passport book in hand. Andrew and his team look forward to helping more Long Islanders get the assistance they need. Whether it’s the VA, Social Security, Medicare, the IRS, passports, or other federal services, the office is always ready to step in and help. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Keeping Up with Congress Strengthening the U.S. Coast Guard A strong U.S. Coast Guard is critical to our national security. As Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Andrew met with Sean Plankey and Rear Adm. Michael Platt alongside Congressman Nick LaLota to discuss mission readiness and the future of the service. The Coast Guard plays a vital role in securing our maritime borders, protecting critical infrastructure, and responding to emergencies. Andrew remains committed to ensuring the service has the resources it needs to protect our homeland and secure our waters. House Passes the SAVE Act This week, Andrew voted in favor of the SAVE Act, a commonsense measure to strengthen election integrity by requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. Requiring proof of citizenship helps protect the integrity of our elections while ensuring eligible citizens can participate in our democracy. Andrew remains committed to policies that uphold confidence in our electoral system and protect the rights of American citizens. Advancing Housing Supply and Affordability This week, Andrew voted in favor of the bipartisan Housing for the 21st Century Act. Thanks to the leadership of Representatives French Hill and Mike Flood and members of the Financial Services Committee, this legislation takes practical steps to increase housing supply, reduce unnecessary red tape, and help bring down housing costs nationwide. Andrew remains focused on advancing policies that address affordability challenges and expand opportunity. Thanks for reading! Do you know someone who might like to receive these updates?
