I was eleven years old when John Lewis walked across the bridge in Selma, Alabama -- and I remember later watching him on television, inspiring the call to public service that enabled me to be who I am today.

Now, as I celebrate the life and memory of my dear friend and colleague, Congressman Lewis, I'm also remembering his passion, sacrifice, and connection to an era that secured the rights for people like us to have a voice in our communities and government.

Congressman Lewis' activism with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was part of a movement that changed our country -- a movement that we're still fighting for and still holding a connection to today. I would have never imagined when I ran for Congress that I would be working with my hero -- and I'm incredibly proud to have served with him.

Now more than ever before, for the sake of democracy, Congressman Lewis' legacy and the fight to do what's right even in times of adversity, must continue on. He taught me that when we work together, we build a stronger tomorrow for each and every person in our communities -- and I will never forget these lessons.

It was an honor to have served with Congressman Lewis -- and I will continue to honor his legacy of fighting for equal rights, protections, and justice for all under the law throughout the halls of Congress.
