Dear John,
As the 2020 election approaches, the policy experts at Family Research Council are working to produce the best possible resources to help you navigate the political landscape from a biblical perspective. Along these lines, I would like to share with you my recent article, "Gender and Sexuality in the 2020 Election," which was published in Eikon, the academic journal of the Council for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood.
FRC knows you desire to speak the truth in love and model Christ-like behavior in your life. We also know political matters can be challenging to discuss whether in your Sunday school class, at work, or even around the dinner table. This article analyzes one of the most sensitive and important topics at stake in this year's election -- sexuality and religious liberty.
The article answers questions like: How will issues related to sexuality and religious liberty play a role in the 2020 election? What is the Trump administration's record on these issues? What is Joe Biden's record on them? What do the party platforms and agendas have to say about these topics?
As I note in the article, "Voters will make an important decision in November. Unquestionably, there are significant policy differences between the two major parties and their respective nominees. This is especially true with issues related to gender and complementarity."
Christians believe the gospel of Jesus Christ has implications for all areas of life, including important topics like religious liberty and human sexuality. We also recognize that the government and our elected representatives exercise an outsized influence on how these issues are considered in the public square. Because we care about our neighbors and desire to steward our God-given responsibilities, we must educate ourselves on the major candidates' stances on sexuality and religious liberty. This means knowing their records, policy proposals, and campaign promises on these issues.
To this end, my article outlines what issues will be affected by the upcoming election, including: how "sex" is defined in federal statutes, whether individuals with gender dysphoria can serve in the military, and whether "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" become protected categories in federal policy, and whether our religious freedom will be protected when we disagree with the government on these issues. Both President Trump and former Vice President Biden have taken public positions on these topics and many others, and it is important to be aware of what their positions are.
My prayer is that this article will help you cut through the political noise and understand how religious liberty and issues related to sexuality will be affected by the outcome of the November election.
Be sure to read "Gender and Sexuality in the 2020 Election." For further information on how Christians should think about their political responsibilities, visit FRC.org/engage.
