For months, President Trump has hinted that he could postpone the November general election. Today was his latest such suggestion:
In addition to being ugly and dangerous, the implied threats are empty.
He may have the appetite to delay voting, but he doesn't have the power to do it. The date is locked in by a law passed in 1845. To change the date of the general election would require an act of Congress. There's no sign at all of that happening. So, let's not let talk of postponement affect us. Just ignore it.
Instead of getting distracted by the threatened postponement of Election Day, let's focus on the general election that we know will take place on November 3rd. That's only 96 days away! We all have work to do between now and then.
My job is to make voting as easy as possible for all eligible Minnesotans. That will never change. But this year, there are extra challenges. COVID-19 means that we have to treat the election as a public health issue. We'll need more people to vote from home, and we'll need more people who will step up to become poll workers. We'll then be able to put on a safe and secure election.
The election must proceed as planned. And it will. On November 3rd, or beforehand, we will vote for candidates who share our views and values. No one can stand in our way.
Keep up the good fight.
