Dear Delaware Democrats,
As we celebrate Black History Month, I write to you with deep pride and profound gratitude as a Black woman, as a Democrat, and as the first Black person to serve as Chair of the Delaware Democratic Party.
I am deeply committed to this state, its people, and its future. Being entrusted to lead our Party is an honor I do not take lightly. I know that for many constituents, I serve as a beacon of representation. And I know one thing to be true: representation matters.
Without representation, diverse perspectives go unheard. Trust in the democratic process erodes. Equity is not fostered. And too many children grow up without seeing someone in leadership who looks like them.
Here in Delaware, we stand on the shoulders of giants. Ours is a state where the Underground Railroad passed through brave communities that risked everything in the fight for freedom.
It is home to the Bulah v. Gebhart case, which was consolidated into the landmark Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision that led to the desegregation of schools nationwide. Delaware has never been a bystander in the fight for equality. We have been part of the arc that bends toward justice.
But the representation and progress we have worked so hard to build are under attack.
Since Donald Trump was elected to office again, we have witnessed deliberate efforts to dismantle civil rights protections and decades of inclusion work. We have seen attacks on how our history is told and taught. We have seen equity-related programs targeted for elimination. We have seen civil rights offices hollowed out and expertise pushed aside.
These actions are not symbolic. They send a message to all children about whose stories matter and who belongs at the table.
That is why this role carries weight far beyond party leadership. It is about showing Black Americans and young people across Delaware that their voices matter. That their leadership matters. That their history will not be erased.
Black History Month is not only about reflection, but it is also about resolve. Democrats, let’s defend the progress generations fought to secure.
Let’s continue building a Delaware and an America, where equity is protected, democracy is strengthened, and every child can see themselves in positions of leadership.
I’m proud to be leading the Delaware Democratic Party. Let’s rise up together. Chip in today, $25, $50, $75, or whatever you can to support the Party’s work to organize, mobilize, and protect our shared values. [[link removed]] We will not fold. We will not be intimidated. And we will not allow Black history nor Black leadership to be erased.
In solidarity,
Evelyn Brady
