John,
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has a well-documented history of racism and resistance to transparency.
Now, CBP is being sent covertly to our cities [[link removed]] in an aggressive federal response to peaceful protests calling attention to racial injustice following the killing of George Floyd by police officers.
No federal enforcement agency should be able to deflect scrutiny and resist accountability. And the public deserves to know why and how an immigration agency is being deployed to these cities.
The American Immigration Council is investigating CBP’s actions. We just filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to obtain records on the federal deployment efforts that involve immigration agencies.

We’re joined by the American Civil Liberties Union of San Diego & Imperial Counties, American Civil Liberties Union of Texas Border Rights Center, and the Black Alliance for Just Immigration.
The Council has long documented [[link removed]] and challenged [[link removed]] abusive enforcement actions by immigration agencies—CBP in particular. The agency has a history [[link removed]] of:
*
Racial
profiling.
*
Using
excessive
force
[[link removed]]
.
*
Mocking
migrant
deaths.
*
Degrading
Latinx
members
of
Congress.
*
Aggressively
separating
migrant
families.
This is an untenable situation that demands oversight and public scrutiny.
Sincerely,
Claudia Valenzuela
