Dear Friends,

On 8 January 2026, the Iranian regime brutally cut access to internet and phone lines nationwide as payback for the widespread protests that erupted at the end of last year. This blackout made it almost impossible for journalists and independent media outlets to communicate with the outside world. It also profoundly amplified the climate of intimidation and fear faced by the Iranian people and media professionals alike in a country already destabilised by interconnected political, economic, and social crises.

During the blackout, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) accomplished one of its main missions — maintaining contact with journalists even in the toughest of times and making sure that their voices are heard around the world. We interviewed as many journalists on the ground as possible to shine a light on this deeply concerning situation. None of this would’ve been possible without your vital support. Thank you.

We’re working hard to gather the full story and, according to our latest figures, since January, at least eight journalists have been arrested in different provinces across the country, including Hamed Araqi – a photojournalist, arrested in Karaj, detained in connection with his coverage of anti-government protests. On 8 February, journalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was also sentenced to prison yet again, this time for seven and a half years in another sham trial. We sounded the alarm over the Iranian regime's relentless persecution of Narges Mohammadi and its mass crackdown on journalists in general.

By supporting our work, you give us the means to ensure journalists can continue investigating, documenting and bringing the truth to light in Iran and around the world. And, if you believe, like us, that we need to protect press freedom in moments of extreme crisis, then we need your support now more than ever. Thank you for standing with us — and with journalists like Hamed and Narges who work against all odds to keep us informed.
