Agribusiness companies are stealing water and territory from families in the Cerrado region of Piauí, Brazil. Please take action now in solidarity.

The Grinalda do Ouro community, a traditional rural community with over 20 families in the Gilbués municipality, is facing an attempt by land grabbers to expel them and destroy their natural resources.

As of Wednesday, February 11, tractors have plowed through the community , destroying vegetation, vital water sources, and even homes . Armed security have brandished weapons while construction workers build a dam which would drain nearby marshland and cut off water access for those living downstream.

Agribusiness companies and their armed hired thugs aim to build a large-scale monoculture farming project—an irrigated soybean plantation. The land grabbers claim to be authorized by the Secretariat of the Environment and Water Management (SEMARH). SEMARH allegedly authorized the project despite knowing about the community's presence.

The community denounces this serious violation of rights and the government’s complicity. But they need your support.
