Friends,
In a tweet this morning, President Trump suggested that the November General Election should be delayed — throwing around false claims that mail-in voting lacks security and accuracy.
First off, Trump doesn’t have the authority to delay the election. And secondly, despite his continued efforts to suppress voters during this pandemic, our democracy will persist.
Trump knows that people are worried about going to the polls due to the coronavirus, and he’s using that fear to exploit our right to vote. Having alternatives to in-person voting is particularly critical this year, so he's trying to convince the public that it’s unsafe to vote by mail. He hopes that it will discourage and dissuade America’s voters from casting a ballot at all.
We cannot let that happen. The president's tweet claimed that voting by mail is "inaccurate and fraudulent" — but in actuality, Trump is the one who is inaccurate and fraudulent.
We’ve conducted safe and secure elections during past crises — and as Secretary of State, I can assure you that New Mexico’s election administrators are fully prepared to conduct an efficient and fair election during this pandemic. And I will continue fighting to ensure our voting rights are protected.
Please do not allow Trump’s harmful political rhetoric to silence you into sitting this election out.
I encourage you to click here and confirm that your voter registration is complete and up to date. Then, in November, use your right to vote and make your voice heard loud and clear through your ballot!
Your voice matters!
