Rep. Lewis’s life stands as a reminder to all Americans about the transformative power of our nation’s faith in universal equality and freedom. Our hope is that we all remember his sacrifices and his lived testament for all humanity: be bold, be courageous, be hopeful, and never stop stirring up good trouble, because together we can make our greatest dreams real. We also hope you’ll join us in reflecting on the incredible life and teachings of this true American hero and civil rights giant. Rep. Lewis’s courage and wisdom will continue to provide endless inspiration in PFAW’s ongoing fight to stop hate and defend democracy from the endless attacks from the Far Right to undermine and suppress the Black vote. In the coming weeks, PFAW will be launching a new initiative with the goal of mobilizing and defending the Black community's vote against the sustained attacks it has endured over the years. Stay tuned for more details. The impact of Donald Trump’s election victory in 2016 has been enormous. He and his Republican supporters have undermined core democratic principles and will answer to history for putting politics ahead of our lives during the worsening COVID crisis. History will also long remember the consequences of a Supreme Court moved inexorably to the right by Trump justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh—both of whom, but especially Kavanaugh, have taken virtually every opportunity to undermine Americans’ core rights and liberties. Our new report examines the latest Supreme Court term and how Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are accomplishing exactly what they were put on the court to do: overrule abortion rights precedent, attack voting rights, help President Trump evade the rule of law, embitter the lives of immigrants, end the nation’s social safety net, funnel state money into religious education, and transform religious liberty protections from a shield into a sword. Be sure to watch the recording of our member briefing discussing the report and how members can hold their Senators accountable for confirming Trump's nominees: "PFAW Courts Experts Brief Members on SCOTUS Term and the Fight to Protect Our Courts">> Trump may have finally again acknowledged COVID-19 from the briefing room podium last week, but he also couldn't resist incorporating falsehoods and self-congratulation while doing so. "We're leading the world," he lied. But last week the U.S. surpassed four million confirmed cases of coronavirus nationwide – with a million cases having been added in only 15 days. In an op-ed in USA Today, PFAW President Ben Jealous makes the case for policing reform to begin now in the cities and communities where it has the potential for greatest impact: The spring of 2020 has a historic before and after. Before the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery and after — when the rage and pain over police violence and systemic racism erupted in powerful protests that brought us, finally, to a national moment of clarity about racist, violent policing. Americans across all demographics now acknowledge that these scourges exist and must be stopped. However hard-won, this is a gift. It’s a moment to seize.
