I’ve heard people say that we are all adjusting to the “new normal” during COVID. But this is not normal. It is not normal for our immigrant communities to risk our health and our lives in order to make ends meet for our families. It is not normal for people to be evicted and out in the streets in the middle of a pandemic.

Olimpia was a caregiver prior to COVID-19 that looked after a cancer patient. And as an undocumented immigrant, she did not qualify for the federal stimulus check. Having herself contracted COVID-19 and now in recovery; she shares how the neighbors she’s known since immigrating to the United States began disappearing one-by- one as New York went into lockdown.
