John : Voting by mail, and as a result, voter turnout are on the rise in 2020 primaries across the country:
In Kentucky, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, and Rhode Island, the vast majority of ballots cast in their primaries were by mail.
Iowa and Montana had their highest voter turnout ever in a primary. Iowa saw a nearly 1,000% increase in absentee ballots since 2016, and in Montana, voter turnout was up 10%.
In Georgia, 1.1 MILLION absentee ballots were returned, which is up from only 220,000 absentee ballots in the 2018 general election.
This is great news, but we can’t take anything for granted. Trump and Republicans are doing everything in their power to stop vote-by-mail efforts in their tracks. If you can, chip in to help register voters so they can safely cast ballots from home this November.
While so many states are seeing increases in voter turnout and absentee ballot requests, Trump and Republicans are attacking voting by mail with rapid fire lawsuits to block avenues to voting from home.
We can’t afford for them to succeed, because already in primaries across the country this year, we’ve seen hours long lines, limited polling places, and issues with voting machines and ballots -- issues that are having an outsize impact on communities of color that are already subjected to extreme voter suppression.
These primary elections are just the dress rehearsal for November. We need to be ready -- that’s why we’re printing vote-by-mail registration forms and making calls and texts to help voters sign up to vote by mail. But we can’t do it without you. If you can, chip in now before the end-of-month deadline.
Thanks,
Team VFH 2020
