Dear Friend of EMET,
On this day in the Hebrew calendar, of Tisha B ‘Av 2020, Jewish people the world over mourn the destruction of our First and Second Temples. This tragic day marked the beginning of our 2,000 years of exile and a long period where the Jewish people remained stateless and without sovereignty, a standing army to defend ourselves and self-rule. We had been left open to the anti-Semitic passions and vicissitudes of the day, leading to demonization, victimization and years upon years of dhimmitude, inquisitions, pogroms, and culminating in the gas chambers and ovens of Auschwitz.
Once we finally gained sovereignty in 1948, Israel became “the Jew among nations,” and has always been subjected to an egregious double standard not used for any other nation in the world.
Israel and the Jewish people have many enemies. Israel needs clear, decisive and defensible borders, like any other nation, to be able to guard them from any current or potential threat, now or in the future.
In the spirit of Tisha b’Av, today would be the perfect day to sign our petition. Because without mourning and memory of what we have been through, there would be no collective thread to sustain us, and to give us hope for a more secure future.
If you have not already signed our petition, which says that it is up to the modern, revitalized democratically-elected state of Israel to be able to determine what is in their own best national security interests, please consider signing it today. And if you have signed it, please share it as far and as wide as you possibly can. We have already reached over 1,000 signatures. We need as many as we can get before we send it to our members of Congress.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
And for those of you who are fasting, we wish you an easy and a meaningful fast,
Thanks so much for your time and support.
Warmest regards,
Sarah Stern
