Hey John,
Jaclyn and Nurah here. We're writing to you today about the late, great John Lewis, an American hero who inspired so many, including us. His funeral services are today in Atlanta's historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, but the impact that he's had on our lives will last forever. (This is a longer email but we promise it's worth the read ❤️)
In February 2018, just days after we lost 17 members of the Stoneman Douglas community, John Lewis welcomed a group of us into his office in D.C. He told us it wouldn't be easy, but that peace was worth the fight, and we couldn't back down, no matter what. When we looked to create our own march, we followed the path John Lewis blazed before us.

As he shared stories and photos from his own days as a young organizer, Congressman Lewis gave us honest insight into the work that laid ahead. He showed us that age doesn't matter, and that anyone, no matter how young, can be heard if they stand strong for what's right. He told us it wouldn't be easy or quick; that, like him, we might have a lifetime of fighting for what's right ahead of us. But he assured us that justice was worth the fight, and that our work would bring real change.
We will never forget the kindness that Congressman Lewis showed us that day.
John Lewis, the civil rights champion, was on our side.
His dedication to March For Our Lives didn't end there. In March, he walked down the streets of Atlanta shoulder to shoulder with young people demanding change. That April, he joined us at the Town Hall for Our Lives. Not only did he attend, he stayed afterwards to talk with students, marchers, and supporters. He told us to never give up, forever embedding his wisdom into our movement: "There are going to be wins and there are going to be losses, but at the end of the day, you have to keep driving forward."
That's the thing about John Lewis: He always showed up. Whether it was a rally in Atlanta or a political battle in D.C., Congressman Lewis never missed a chance to support his community and advance the causes he held dear. He was passionate about change and no matter the abuse he endured, he was always so optimistic. His life was a constant reminder that if you're going to be in this fight, bring your full self. Show up in the streets and make good trouble (emphasis on the trouble!). But work the system, too. People died for the right to vote. We can't give an inch of our power away by not showing up to the polls.
So, John , we need to do everything we can to honor John Lewis' legacy. Together, we need to:

We will march on in the path that John Lewis cleared for us, and we won't stop until we have won the fight for safer schools, safer communities, and a safer America.
Thank you, John Lewis, for being the first to march for our lives.
