John,
The first time I met Roy Cooper, I was a law student and he was Attorney General.
He took a moment to speak with me, was truly kind, and encouraged me when I told him I wanted to be a prosecutor.
But back then, I didn't really know him. I didn't follow politics that closely and certainly never imagined I’d be in this position someday. I remember kicking myself for not asking better questions because I genuinely assumed I would never see him again.
But because I met him, I started paying closer attention to him, and how he did his job.
I did that for years, through the rest of his time as AG, and then as Governor.
It’s been about 20 years since that first meeting, and now, I really do know the guy.
And here’s who he is:
He’s a true public servant. His idea of a day well spent is finding ways to be useful to others.
When you pair his deep knowledge of North Carolina with the fundamental decency that informs his decisions, you get exactly the kind of person we need in the U.S. Senate.
Today is a big fundraising deadline for his campaign and I offered to send this email to give him a boost. I hope you’ll take me up on that and chip in what you can to help him hit this goal.
Politics has changed a lot since that first meeting, but Roy hasn't. He’s still that same kind, focused person who took a moment for a random law student — only now, he’s ready to take that same focus and heart to Washington.
That’s great news for us. Let’s have his back.
All the best,
Jeff
