| Friend, More than 100,000 incarcerated people have been infected with COVID-19 and at least 800 incarcerated individuals and correctional officers have died. As Congress negotiates the latest COVID-19 relief package, take action to urge them to protect and release people behind bars to save lives. With your help, we convinced the House to include decarceration provisions when it passed the HEROES Act. But now we need to make sure these critical provisions are also included in the final version of the relief package passed by Congress. We know that people behind bars are some of the most vulnerable to contracting the virus. Yet the current Senate package does nothing to address to plight of incarcerated people. Leadership is negotiating what will be contained in the next COVID-19 package. This is likely our last chance to ensure it includes measures to release incarcerated people from federal custody and encourage states to reduce their jail and prison populations. When you call you can say: I’m calling to urge Congressional leadership to protect and release incarcerated people in the next COVID-19 relief package. Please support the decarceration provisions in the HEROES Act, which includes measures to release certain incarcerated individuals from federal custody into community supervision. It also provides incentives to states and localities to reduce their jail and prison populations.
