Dear John,

Urgent Action Needed: Stop the disastrous Pebble Mine before it's too late!

I am writing to you from Bristol Bay, Alaska -- my home. This beautiful place is home to many Native communities, abundant wildlife, and the site of the one of the world’s largest wild salmon runs.

Unfortunately, it is also the proposed location for an environmental disaster that would scar this land forever: Pebble Mine. Help stop Pebble Mine with a $10 donation now!

Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers essentially cleared the way for the Pebble Mine project to move forward. It released a rushed and woefully inadequate Final Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed mine. We need your help to fight back.

Stop the mining industry from wiping out the world’s largest salmon run with toxic waste from Pebble Mine! Donate $10 or more to Friends of the Earth now!

Pebble Mine would permanently damage Bristol Bay’s environment and devastate the Indigenous communities, like mine, that rely on the area’s rich natural resources. The wild sockeye salmon population could be destroyed and local economies ruined, while corporate polluters rake in millions in profit.

Specifically, this mine would generate more than 10 billion tons of dangerous mining waste, pollute more than 5,000 acres of wetlands, ponds and lakes, and wipe out 90 miles of salmon streams that produce half the world's sockeye salmon.

Recently, the EPA passed up a pivotal chance to provide proper review and oversight of Pebble Mine’s permit application, ignoring the direct needs of the local communities and other stakeholders. The agency allowed the Army Corps to continue its botched process -- corrupted by millions of lobbying dollars spent for this disaster.

We shouldn’t be surprised. The Army Corps and EPA have undermined the science and the will of the local community at every step in this process -- despite the fact that 80% of Bristol Bay residents, 85% of commercial fishermen in the area, and the scientific community are demanding that this dangerous project be stopped.

Stop Pebble Mine from destroying Bristol Bay: Donate $10 or more before it’s too late!

Instead of listening to the people and to scientific experts, the Army Corps of Engineers is using a sham process to barrel forward with this environmental and community-destroying project.

The Final Environmental Impact Statement is the latest example. It fails to meet even the lowest bar of scientific rigor, and completely ignores the concerns and scientific documentation brought by experts and local communities. Worse still, it actively made it hard for locals to engage in the process -- many of whom had to travel thousands of miles to have their voices heard about a project happening against their will in their own backyard.

This appears to be yet another ploy to put more money in the hands of big mining corporations -- like the CEO of Pebble Partnership Limited, who will get a $12.5 million bonus if the Army Corps permit comes on schedule. We must hold the Army Corps of Engineers and the EPA accountable for failing to protect Bristol Bay’s people and environment over greedy corporate interests.

We need your voice to protect Alaska’s Bristol Bay, and all those who depend on it. Donate $10 to Friends of the Earth today.

We’ve stopped this mine before, in 2014, and we have a plan to do it again. Friends of the Earth is going all-in on this fight with a comprehensive, multifaceted strategy to stop this mine at any cost, using every tool in our toolbox.

Pressure from Friends of the Earth members like you helped stop the EPA from greenlighting this project in the past. We’re organizing another pressure campaign on both the Army Corps and the EPA--demanding that the Corps reject the permit, and if they refuse, that the EPA do the right thing and veto it. Thanks to our members, we have already delivered a combined 80,000 comments to these agencies.

At the same time, we’re pushing financiers to back out of the project. After more than 40,000 Friends of the Earth members like you signed a petition to First Quantum Minerals, it pulled its funding for Pebble Mine. We are making this mine as toxic to its would-be supporters as it is to local communities and wildlife.

In short, we’re building a massive grassroots opposition to the mine, working alongside local coalitions, and exploring every possible option to win. We have a real shot at stopping this thing. But as we near the final stages of this fight, we need your help to keep this work going.

The coming weeks could make or break the future of Bristol Bay: Please rush a donation of $10 or more to Friends of the Earth today and block the disastrous Pebble Mine.
