Dear Friends,
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Judge William T. Newman, Jr., founder of Arlington Community Foundation.
Judge Newman was motivated by his deeply held belief that Arlington has all the ingredients necessary to be a shining example of a just, generous, and compassionate place where everyone can thrive.
As a trailblazing member of the Arlington County Board, a tireless judge, and the founder of Arlington Community Foundation, he touched virtually every corner of this community. When he spoke, everyone in the room listened. When he acted, people followed his example. He put in the work to build and steward the foundational elements of a strong community that will benefit this place he loved for generations to come.
The Community Foundation exists because he saw what was possible when people come together to support their neighbors, invest in local solutions, and build institutions that outlast any one moment.
To honor Judge Newman in his own words, we invite you to take a few minutes to watch his 2023 Spirit of Community keynote address. It reflects the values that shaped his life, and the community he worked so hard to strengthen.
The deep loss we feel today is a testament to the depth and breadth of the legacy he leaves behind for all of us.
With sympathy and gratitude,
Jennifer Owens
President and CEO
