John, last November, heavy monsoon rains, flash floods and tropical cyclones destroyed homes, submerged roads, cut communities off from power and claimed hundreds of lives in Indonesia. 

The impact on children was immediate. “Children have lost everything—their homes and their belongings—and they are out of school,” said Fadli Usman, humanitarian director of Save the Children Indonesia. 

Within a few days, our teams distributed four truckloads of temporary shelter supplies and food to affected children and established child-friendly spaces for kids to recover. Save the Children continues to meet kids need’s need to make sure they can learn, grow and remain safe.

Families like Vino’s* endured the devastating aftermath of these floods. In the middle of the night in November, 16-year-old Vino noticed water rising rapidly in his home, putting his family at risk and swallowing everything they owned. He quickly tried to save his father, who suffers from the impacts of a stroke and heart complications. 

Vino and his other siblings put their father on a three-wheeled bike and navigated through the flood waters to an evacuation site at a nearby mosque. During the inundation, Vino did everything he could to save his school diplomas and his family’s documents to preserve his identity and access to education in the future. 

Vino and his family lost their home, and his father wasn’t able to get medical treatment because the hospital nearby was also damaged by the flood. 

But because Save the Children was there, we provided Vino and his family with free health services as well as mattresses, blankets and food supplies.

In Indonesia, we can continue to provide medical support to children threatened by waterborne diseases due to floods, provide shelter to families who’ve been displaced and establish child-friendly spaces to help children cope.
