In America, voters pick our leaders. And yet, President Trump is urging his Republican allies to “nationalize” elections and take over voting from the states.

The so-called “SAVE America Act” would dictate how states register and verify voters with a top-down, Trump-dictated federal power grab: making it harder for eligible Americans to vote, and piling new, unfunded burdens onto election officials who are already stretched thin.

This is not an isolated proposal. It’s part of a broader effort — alongside the SAVE Act and the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA Act) — to seize control over elections before a single ballot is cast.

But here are the real facts: the SAVE America Act, along with the SAVE and MEGA Acts, would force states into a Trump-designed election system — even though states already run secure elections tailored to their voters and communities.

And it would create new barriers for eligible voters, inject chaos into election administration, increase costs, confusion, and the risk of mistakes — all while making it easier for President Donald Trump to further consolidate his own power.

That’s not how a healthy democracy works, and it does not make elections safer. And frankly, that’s why most Americans trust their local election officials to run safe and fair elections more than they trust D.C. politicians who want to swoop in and impose their will.  

Here at Issue One Action, we believe our election rules should be guided by facts, constitutional principles, and respect for voters — not political gamesmanship. These bills fail that test.
