PLANNED PARENTHOOD
From day one, the Trump-Vance administration's attacks on sexual and reproductive health care have made health care more expensive and harder to get.

And when the administration and its backers in Congress "defunded" Planned Parenthood by trying to block people with Medicaid from using their insurance at Planned Parenthood health centers, they put the health of millions of people at risk.

But care continues at Planned Parenthood health centers around the country — and we still need you in the fight to protect and restore access to care.

Here's a quick recap on how we got here, how patients are being affected today, and what happens next.

January 2025

The Trump-Vance administration takes office and immediately targets reproductive health.

The Trump-Vance administration takes office and President Trump and Vice President Vance join anti‑abortion activists at the March for Life, making clear that attacking reproductive health will be a top priority of the administration.

May 2025

H.R. 1 is introduced in Congress.

The bill, among other attacks on health care, "defunds" Planned Parenthood by trying to block people from using their Medicaid insurance to get care like birth control, cancer screenings, primary care and more from Planned Parenthood health centers.

June 2025

The public speaks out.

Public polling finds 80% of people are against stopping all payments to Planned Parenthood health centers.
Across the country, Planned Parenthood organizations and their allies turned out to show their support for Planned Parenthood health centers. Activists rallied at events in their communities nationwide and drove tens of thousands of calls and emails to their members of Congress.

July 2025

Planned Parenthood is "defunded."

Despite public outcry and the clear harm that will come from “defunding” Planned Parenthood health centers, the Trump administration's allies in Congress force through the bill "defunding" Planned Parenthood for one year.

July 2025

Planned Parenthood sues in federal court.

A temporary restraining order followed by a preliminary injunction stops the Trump administration from enforcing the "defunding" provision; access to health care is protected for two months, but an appeals court later allows the law to be enforced.

September 2025

Planned Parenthood health centers continue their commitment to their patients.

In September 2025, the first month the "defund" law became enforceable, Planned Parenthood health centers provided more than 100,000 visits for patients who use Medicaid at no cost to patients – shielding them from the harm of this cruel law.

Unfortunately, the consequences for patients will worsen considerably over time as health centers close, costs rise, and access to their trusted provider is pushed further out of reach.

December 2025

Health centers are forced to close.

By the end of the year, 51 Planned Parenthood health centers closed across 18 states — leaving patients with fewer options for essential health care, like birth control, abortion, cancer screenings, primary care, and more. The harm is felt most in rural areas and communities already facing provider shortages.

January 2026

Anti‑abortion members of Congress pledge to permanently "defund" Planned Parenthood health centers.

The Republican Study Committee releases its framework for a 2026 reconciliation bill that would permanently extend the unconstitutional provision to "defund" Planned Parenthood health centers.

NOW

The "defund" fight continues.

This attack has had devastating consequences on care in just a few months. As lawmakers continue their yearslong effort to control our bodies and health care decisions, health care costs are skyrocketing. And by targeting Planned Parenthood health centers, they are worsening the crisis they created in our country's fragile health care infrastructure.

Knowledge is power. Share this information with your family and friends. Let them know what's at stake when health care is under political attack.

Planned Parenthood will always find new ways to ensure people have access to the best care possible. Despite the Trump-Vance administration's assault on care and the closure of dozens of health centers, four new Planned Parenthood health centers opened last year to serve patients in Colorado, Virginia, Nevada and Ohio — and virtual health care was expanded to serve even more patients across the country.

The mission remains: Care, no matter what.
