Donald Trump is once again attacking the foundation of our democracy.
In recent days, he’s openly pushed the idea that Republicans should “take over the voting process” in at least 15 places across the country — threatening to use federal power to interfere in elections run by states and local communities.
Let’s be clear about what this is: an authoritarian power grab, driven by Trump’s continued refusal to accept the fact that he lost the 2020 election.
Rather than fulfill the responsibilities of the job he was elected to do in 2024, Trump is still so insecure that he lost the 2020 race that he’s trying to rewrite history in real time.
Trump dispatched his Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, to raid the election office in Fulton County, Georgia, to try and come up with (and probably cook) some evidence to suggest that he actually won in 2020.
These conspiracy theories have been debunked again and again, yet he keeps returning to them. There’s a vivid phrase from the Book of Proverbs, “like a dog returneth to its own vomit,” — that’s what Trump is doing with the 2020 election.
Now he’s going even further, suggesting that elections should be federalized in 15 places. He didn’t say which ones, but given his track record, we know exactly what he means: abusing federal power to target Democratic states, cities, and communities.
That is without precedent. And it is flatly unconstitutional.
Remember, the Constitution was a creation of the state governments in 1787 — it makes clear that we are not a system where the states are subordinates or pawns of the federal government. Elections are run by the states.
Virginia has a long record of fair, secure, verifiable elections under Democratic and Republican governors alike, with bipartisan election boards at every level.
Donald Trump and his administration have no right to seize control of our elections — full stop.

Just last November, Virginians delivered a historic election — electing our first woman governor in Abigail Spanberger and making history up and down the ballot. We did it fairly. Transparently. And lawfully.
We will continue to run fair elections in 2026 and beyond, and we will not allow Donald Trump or his allies to interfere with Virginia’s elections or anyone else’s.
