Youth in Alaska will be heard in court on March 4, 2026!

8 brave young people from across Alaska will appear before the Alaska Supreme Court in Sagoonick v. State of Alaska II, a landmark constitutional climate case.

They are challenging the State’s support for the Alaska LNG Project, suing to stop this massive fossil fuel project that would roughly triple Alaska’s greenhouse gas emissions for decades. Construction and operation of the pipeline alone would emit an estimated 2.3 to 3.9 gigatons of CO2-equivalent over its lifespan.

The youth argue that the State’s policies forcing development of this project violate their constitutional rights to a climate system that sustains human life, liberty, and dignity, and their right to equal access to public trust resources. They are asking the court to strike the state laws mandating the project as unconstitutional and prohibit the state from moving forward with the project.

On March 5th, 18 courageous children and youth will stand before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, challenging a federal agency whose policies treat children’s lives as worthless.

The youth plaintiffs argue that the EPA, the very agency charged with protecting children’s health and welfare, has systematically discounted the economic value of their lives and their future when determining how much climate pollution to allow. By doing so, the government is violating their constitutional rights to equal protection of the law, including their fundamental right to life.

The young plaintiffs are already living with decades-long consequences of these economic and pollution policies, including extreme heat, wildfire smoke, asthma attacks, evacuations, displacement, and exposure to dangerous air pollution.

At the hearing, the court will hear arguments that children are uniquely protected under the Constitution and that the EPA’s actions unlawfully sacrifice children’s lives and health in favor of economic interests of adults today who profit off of fossil fuel pollution. They’re asking the Ninth Circuit to reinstate their case and rule that courts have a duty to hear constitutional claims brought by children whose lives and rights are harmed by government policies.

The 22 courageous Lighthiser v. Trump plaintiffs will appear before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals for a hearing on April 13th at 9AM PST time in Portland, Oregon where they will ask the court to allow their case to proceed on the merits.

They are challenging three of President Trump’s executive orders that unleash fossil fuels, block renewable energy, and suppress climate science. They argue that the executive orders not only exacerbate the climate emergency, which is already causing them significant harm, but violate their constitutional right to life and liberty.

Stay tuned for more details and how you can join us live and support the youth!

At this time, upholding constitutional rights seems more vital than ever before.

These youth are walking forward in bravery, ensuring their voices are heard by those in power. Thank you for walking alongside them and cheering them on as they secure their rights at state, federal, and global levels.

We look forward to seeing you at our events in the coming weeks!
