Every child is our child: contribute to our sanctuary schools.

Dear John, 

It has been exactly one month since ICE kidnapped Liam Conejo Ramos and his father from their home in Columbia Heights. Liam was in prekindergarten. Liam was learning about shapes, colors, and letters. Masked ICE agents detained him. Though he is back home, he has not been back to school since, and the Columbia Heights School District continues to be an epicenter for ICE activity. The family is in hiding as ICE stalks their neighbors and teachers, detaining 23 parents at Liam’s school alone. The district closed last Monday due to a bomb threat. Liam continues to suffer.

James Baldwin famously said, “The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe.” Each week, parents and caregivers fill more than 3,000 neighborhood school patrol shifts putting these words to action. Minneapolis Parents for Public Schools (MFPS) are trained, supported and organized to keep our children safe. MFPS is part of a larger network of patrols organized neighborhood by neighborhood. 

This is essential work. Our care and solidarity is breaking their campaign of terror. We have forced cracks in their coalition, as every day more and more people are being catalyzed to take action. We continue forward because we don’t settle for crumbs, we are here for real change – we are organizing to get ICE out of Minnesota. Contribute to our Sanctuary School organizing. Kids should be able to go to school without worrying they they'll be teargassed as they leave or used as bait by ICE agents once they arrive home. Liam should still be in school.
