My daughter is four years old, and there are times that I lie awake at night sorting through my worry and fear for her future and the path our country is going down.
Don’t get me wrong: we are fortunate to have our health, surrounded by family and community that cares, and a loving home.
But every parent worries. And lately it feels like there is more to think and worry about and less progress being made on some very big problems.
Kids are falling behind. Technology is taking over everything in our lives, and AI is a scary and uncertain tool that no one really understands. Healthcare is a luxury very few can comfortably afford. Schools are underfunded and educators are stretched thin. People are killed protesting peacefully in the streets by their own government.
So, like I said…there’s a bit to think about.
But deep down I know this is true: the antidote to apathy and anxiety about our future is action.
Together, we can return to a place where our country honored actual heroes instead of felons, pedophiles, insurrectionists, and proud slaveowning racists. A time when we gave high honors to courageous people like John Lewis, like when the Navy christened a ship Good Trouble after Lewis’ inspiring saying:
