John,
The **impeachment trial of Ken Paxton**, mockery of justice that it was, set me on this path of running to replace Paxton as Texas Attorney General. That’s the journey we’re now on, where I’m the frontrunner in the Democratic primary, with less than a month to go.
The evidence at trial was clear and demonstrated abuse of office beyond any reasonable doubt. That made for an easy vote to convict Paxton on 14 of the 16 articles of impeachment brought against him.
But serving as a juror in that trial was not easy. It was painful to watch the Republican senators wrestle with their consciences, and against all reason, ultimately capitulate to political pressure and vote to acquit.
Midway through that vote, I looked out a window and saw the U.S. and Texas flags blowing proudly in the wind. **The irony was sickening.** At that very moment, the Texas Senate was weakening the institutions those flags represent.
**Ken Paxton abused his office** – flagrantly and persistently. The evidence showed he repeatedly ordered subordinates to act against their professional judgment. He interfered in public information requests, foreclosure sales, and private litigation. He used the powers of his office, including criminal process, to attack law enforcement, public officials, judges, and private citizens.
This wasn’t subtle. There was no lack of evidence of his crimes. The Texas Senate floor was littered with smoking guns.
John, Ken Paxton's impeachment trial revealed something that all Texans need to confront right now, before our upcoming primary elections: the controlling faction of **the Texas Republican Party no longer stands for limited government, institutional integrity, or the rule of law.**
***Democrats do.***
We cannot abide a Texas AG who abuses the office, shields and participates in corruption, or allows Donald Trump’s reign of chaos to go unchecked. We must have an Attorney General who will act as the check and balance that undergirds our system of government, who will act – immediately and fearlessly – against the abuse of power whenever, wherever, and by whomever it is committed.
That is the fight I am in now.
John, are you ready to help me replace Ken Paxton and restore the rule of law? **[With just seven days before Texans can head to the polls and cast their vote in our primary election, we need to raise the funds to reach voters across the state.
