Hi John,

Black history is American history. It’s the expansion of democracy, the fight for equal justice under the law, and the work of building a country that often falls short of its loftiest expectations but always strives to improve and build a more perfect union.

Here in Massachusetts, that history is woven into everyday life: in our neighborhoods, our music, our faith communities, and our sports. Bill Russell didn’t just change basketball in Boston. He demanded civil rights and respect in a city and a country still learning how to live up to its ideals.

Last month, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I joined community members in Boston and on the North Shore at Embrace Honors MLK 2026, the MLK Jr. Memorial Breakfast, and local events rooted in service and faith. These gatherings were reminders that honoring history isn’t about ceremony. It’s about responsibility.

That responsibility includes confronting the ways Black Americans were denied opportunities they earned. For years, I’ve co-sponsored the GI Bill Restoration Act with Congressman Jim Clyburn to restore education, housing, and economic benefits to Black World War II veterans and their families who were excluded when they came home. The impact of that exclusion is still felt today in generational wealth gaps.

While it’s important to acknowledge where our country has fallen short, Black history is about so much more. It’s about the culture, community, excellence, and leadership that Black Americans have built that continue to shape our entire country.

I’m proud to stand beside Black leaders across Massachusetts in celebrating those contributions and continuing to build a future that better reflects the lofty goals upon which our country was founded.
