John,
This month, we lost Lee Hamilton, who represented Indiana in Congress for more than three decades and spent his life thinking deeply about how our democracy actually functions when it’s working. Before his passing, he wrote a remarkable piece [[link removed]] that I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read.
Lee believed that no reform, no rule change, and no procedural fix would restore Congress as a real check on power unless members can build relationships that cross party lines and endure real disagreement. I agree.

In 2019, during the first Trump administration, Rep. Thomas Massie and I worked together to pass a bipartisan War Powers Resolution to end U.S. involvement in Yemen. Years later, that same trust helped us lead the bipartisan effort to force the release of the Epstein files.
That didn’t happen because we agreed on everything. It happened because we had built enough trust to pick up the phone, text honestly, and work through differences without posturing.
I hope you’ll take a moment to read Lee Hamilton’s final reflection [[link removed]] . It’s thoughtful, generous, and deeply needed right now.
