Dear Friend,
Ever heard this story before?
After a long and grueling investigation, the police bring down a sex trafficking operation.
They arrest the trafficker and free the survivors. The sex buyers, though, the men who enabled this sex trafficking operation, seem to get away unscathed.
The city holds a big press conference proclaiming victory. And it is a victory... for now.
But without prosecuting sex buyers, this cycle will continue. Demand for commercial sex is driven by sex buyers. Without their dollars, there is no marketplace for sex trafficking.
In fact, a study by Demand Abolition, a leading anti-trafficking organization, found that only 6% of sex buyers reported ever being arrested for purchasing sex. This is exactly why the sex trafficking industry is able to flourish: buyers fear no repercussions.
While it is crucial to hold traffickers accountable, it is just as important to recognize that sex buyers are the foremost reason why sex trafficking exists in the first place.
Thankfully, many states are starting to wake up to this fact. 👏🏼
Most recently, the Governor of Kansas signed a new law making sex buying a felony offence!
This law includes a minimum fine of $2,000 for sex buyers, with the money going back to advocacy groups. For first time offenders, they must complete a sex buyer accountability course, and a second offense would result in two felonies on a person’s record.
