Friend, History is a curious thing. Our understanding of our past changes with time - moving through phases where our perception shifts, evolves and deepens. This examination of our history is constant, and it happens in the public sphere through discussions via social media, the news, commentary, and politics. We are in the midst of a significant reorganization and shift in how we see, hear, and experience the history of race in America. It's colliding with a time when Americans fundamentally re-evaluate how we relate to our institutions of government, our neighbors, and our local communities. This confrontation is messy. It's fraught with conflict. And it's necessary.
I learned a great deal during my campaign for the United States Senate. I learned from a young African-American woman in Waterloo, Iowa that banks often avoid lending money to black entrepreneurs because they say they are "too risky" or "uncapitalized" or in a "bad neighborhood"; code for systemic racism. I learned that special interests would conspire to silence black politicians, community leaders, and activists because they fear what black economic and political power will mean for their bottom lines. Again - systemic racism. And I learned that only by lifting black voices and leaders, listening to their concerns, and forming concrete policy solutions to their challenges will we be able to dismantle these racist systems and succeed in delivering transformative structural change. As the late Congressman John Lewis said in 1963, “I appeal to all of you to get into this great revolution that is sweeping this nation. Get in and stay in the streets of every city, every village and hamlet of this nation until true freedom comes, until the revolution of 1776 is complete.” The New Frontier Action Fund and No Justice No Peace are joining this revolution that is sweeping this nation. We’ve been in the streets and we will stay there until the revolution of 1776 is complete. Join us. We need your support. Your friend, Eddie Mauro
