The answer lies in Puerto Rico’s dilapidated electricity grid — a product of mismanagement by private electric companies and a failed rebuilding effort after Hurricane Maria in 2017, which initially left Puerto Rico in the dark for over 180 days. In his halftime show, Bad Bunny went deep in his catalogue, playing his 2022 song “El Apagón” (The Blackout), with lyrics that reference Puerto Rico’s frequent power outages. That year, Puerto Ricans dealt with 200 hours of electricity interruption, compared to just two hours for customers in the continental U.S. Earthjustice has been working with partners in Puerto Rico for years to build a cleaner, more reliable grid based on renewable energy by way of rooftop solar panels and battery storage — and to use unspent FEMA funds leftover from Hurricane Maria to do it.
