This past weekend, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin echoed what a lot of Republicans are saying about eliminating the federal unemployment insurance payments. “We’re not going to use taxpayer money to pay people more to stay home.”
We know that these UI payments are one of the few policies preventing a “tsunami of evictions.”
When Mnuchin says that the government won’t use public funds to ensure that unemployed people can pay their bills, what he’s really saying is: “we’re not going to use your money to take care of you.”
Democrats should be fighting tooth and nail to extend these UI payments.
But party leadership has already conceded to Republicans that they’re willing to negotiate these payments down to a small fraction of the initial $600/week.
Why are we giving things up before we even arrive at the negotiating table?
This is the reason why so many people have become disillusioned with the Democratic Party: they don’t believe that the party is fighting for their best interests.
We need to elect Democrats who will fight back against the cruelty of the Republican agenda.
