Republicans in Congress are trying to force through one of the most extreme voter suppression bills in modern history. This week, House Republicans plan to vote on the SAVE America Act, legislation designed to knock millions of eligible Americans out of the midterm elections.
This is a deliberate choice by Republicans to make voting harder ahead of the midterm elections, because they are afraid of what a broad, high turnout electorate would mean for their grip on power. The Save America Act and similar bills are not voter ID bills. They are “show your papers” mandates that would force Americans to provide documents that tens of millions of citizens do not have in order to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
If Republicans get their way, millions of Americans will lose access to the ballot in practice, even though they are legally eligible to vote. People without ready access to a passport or birth certificate would be blocked from registering or staying registered. Any married person who took their partner’s last name would face new bureaucratic hurdles just to vote under their legal name, often requiring additional documents, fees, and time many people simply do not have. Voters of color, young people, people with disabilities, rural communities, and low-income Americans would be pushed out first and hardest.

Republicans are pushing the SAVE Act in a crucial midterm election year because their MAGA agenda is deeply unpopular. They are facing widespread voter anger over attacks on rights, democracy, and basic freedoms – and on their ability to afford the basic necessities of life. Rather than accept accountability at the ballot box, they are trying to control who gets to participate in that election at all.
The SAVE America Act would also tear apart the systems that make voting possible for millions of people. Republicans would gut online and mail registration. They would effectively shut down voter registration drives. They would pressure election officials to reject eligible voters rather than help them. The result would be mass exclusion by design.
The House vote is expected this week. If Republicans succeed, eligible Americans will be turned away from the ballot and entire communities will be silenced heading into the midterm elections.
Republicans are trying to shape the outcome of the midterms by deciding who gets to vote. The only way to stop them is to meet this moment with real pressure and sustained opposition.
