July 30th is day set aside by the United Nations to raise awareness of human trafficking.
TODAY, JULY 30TH, IS THE UNITED NATIONS’ WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS.
It’s a day set aside to raise awareness of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of human rights.
Did you know that human trafficking has only been acknowledged as a crime for 20 years?
Trafficking has been happening forever. But it wasn't until the 1990s that human trafficking got a name and moved into the global conversation about human rights. Only in the year 2000 was it recognized as a crime by the US Government & the United Nations. Love146 and many other activists on this issue began to come alive at this time in history.
When the world named it, and began noticing that it was affecting so many people — including millions of children — it felt awful. When we start shining a light on something, it can seem like the problem is bigger to those of us who had never noticed it before. People say things like “This wasn’t happening back in the old days” — but that's not true.
Realizing there's a problem can create a feeling that the world is getting worse. Even though that isn’t necessarily true, your feelings about this problem matter! Your indignation, rage, determination, defiant hope, it all matters — especially what you do next with it. The more clearly we understand what is wrong, the better we can take action to build a safer world for children, and everyone. Our awareness of this problem and refusal to allow it to continue makes the world better.
Will you commit to journeying alongside survivors of child trafficking and preventing it from happening to more children?
Founded in 2002, Love146 is an international human rights organization working to end the trafficking and exploitation of children through survivor care and prevention. Our programs in the US, the UK, the Philippines, and parts of Africa have reached over 55,000 children. The trafficking and exploitation of children is one of the darkest stories and most severe human rights abuses imaginable. Your donation will give children in our care a fighting chance. Thank you for believing in what lies ahead of children, no matter what lies behind them.
