John,
Congress is advancing sweeping federal election legislation: the “Make Elections Great Again” (MEGA) Act (H.R. 7300) — sometimes called “SAVE Act 2.0.”
This bill represents massive federal overreach — including a nationwide ban on Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) in federal elections.
A House committee hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 10.
We must act now.

What the MEGA Act Would Do
❌ Ban Ranked Choice Voting in federal elections
The bill would prohibit RCV for U.S. House and Senate races nationwide — overriding voters in Alaska and Maine , who adopted RCV by ballot initiative, and impacting states like Hawaii and Georgia , where RCV is used for military and overseas voters.
The ban is written broadly enough to threaten other voting reforms that allow voters to rank or select multiple candidates.
❌ Impose sweeping federal mandates on states
The MEGA Act would:
* Require states to share citizenship data with the Department of Homeland Security.
* Require data sharing with the Department of Justice — or risk losing federal election funding.
* Mandate photo ID for all in-person voting and copies of ID for non–in-person voting.
* Criminalize voter registration assistance without proof of citizenship.
* Effectively prohibit mail-in voting.
* Impose costly, unfunded mandates on ballots, provisional voting, voter rolls, and even driver’s license design.
This is a federal takeover of election administration.
Why This Matters
This bill:
* Overrides the will of voters who adopted RCV democratically.
* Attempts to make it harder for some people to vote.
* Creates chaos and unfunded burdens for local election officials.
* Threatens confusion heading into the midterms.
* Chills local innovation and reform.
Ranked Choice Voting is a party-neutral, pro-voter reform that:
* Elects majority winners
* Encourages coalition-building
* Expands voter choice
* Adds transparency and accountability
At a time when 9 in 10 Americans say our political system is broken, Congress should not be banning reforms that strengthen voter trust.
Will It Pass?
The bill is likely to advance in the House and may be used to pressure the Senate to move related legislation. Last session, similar legislation passed the House but died in the Senate after widespread opposition.
That outcome is possible again — but only with strong, visible pushback.

Minnesota has demonstrated that elections can be secure, transparent, and innovative. Washington should not override voters or strip states of their authority.
This moment requires full-throated opposition.
